The experiences and influences that have shaped this artist’s path from his work with the icons like Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto or as co-founder of the Groove Collective, to composer Craig Harris’s reed man to now Iconic trombonist Fred Wesley’s current saxophonist and flutist are very clear. It is evident as to who is casting this benevolent sorcery.

Jay Rodriguez’s new double recording Sierra & MuthaFlower contains years of hard work and pent-up musical expression of the five years since Jay released his last title as artist in 2018. Sierra & MuthaFlower’s music streams out as if a dam had burst, and even the double length format could barely contain the wave of soulfulness, energy, and lyrical creativity that rushes out. I’ve been listening to Jay for decades, since his work with Groove Collective— a seminal 1990’s DJ/Live music collaboration. I've also had the pleasure of recording and touring with Jay on my own projects, where i’ve always found him to be not only a strong and versatile soloist with a range on the horn from Coltrane/Dolphy to honkers like Illinois Jacquet (and back!), but someone who also really gets how to work in an ensemble, support other soloists, dialogue with vocalists (an increasingly rare combination these days).
On these recordings, we also get to hear Jay’s formidable skills as composer, arranger, bandleader.
The record is pure soul, pure groove…and pure NYC. This is the sound track for the block party of our dreams.
